The Executive Lounge is situated on the ground floor, and is open daily from 6am to 2pm. There’s a mix of two- and four-person dining tables, plus some high-top communal seating. A separate hallway leads from the living room to the bedroom, with the bathroom in the middle to the left. The Essex House is located near some of New York’s most celebrated attractions. I caught the hotel on an off-peak night, so I was able to redeem an anniversary Free Night Award from my Amex US Bonvoy Brilliant Card worth up to 50,000 Bonvoy points. Rooms range from Kings to one-bedroom Suites and Family Connector rooms with two baths. Even the most basic King room is a good size by New York standards and is equipped with a large desk and a chaise longue. Anticipate those uber-comfy Marriott beds and pillows, luxury amenities like robes, slippers and minibars, as well as sweeping Central Park views from a batch of the rooms, particularly those on high floors. The Essex House is more expensive than the less iconic, less well-located Benjamin, but it offers a similar level of luxury and also features an in-house spa. The more expensive Trump International Hotel and Tower New York is right down the street; guests there get slightly bigger rooms but none of the Old New York ambience.
A sophisticated lobby space feels almost palatial, with tray ceilings trimmed in gold, checkerboard stone floors, mammoth black-marble columns and a wide central hall that leads to the elevators and executive lounge. The neutral scheme of black, white, mahogany brown and creamy beige continues from the lobby and reception area through to the guestrooms. Our newly reimagined premier suites feature multiple spacious bedrooms, lavish living areas, curated art collections, ornate, spa-style bathrooms and stunning views of Central Park and Manhattan.
I’d note that this property is a bit older in design and furnishings, and its Executive Lounge more basic, compared to more modern JW Marriott properties around the world that I’ve stayed at. I largely enjoyed my stay here, in large part due to the amazing Manhattan Suite upgrade that I wasn’t expecting. Like most New York properties, this one is fairly expensive, though can be worth it on Bonvoy points or using a Free Night Award.

Since I was busy with work in the evening, I headed to Southgate Bar & Restaurant to use my US$35 dining credit from the US$35 destination fee. The primary bathroom featured a modern porcelain sink with a black frame underneath, while the rest of the bathroom had more old-school marble flooring and tiling, maintaining some of the hotel’s older remnants.

A preferred choice for celebrities, this property positions guests in an area convenient to most anywhere; plus, the park views are nothing short of spectacular. Still, given the impressive suites and the heritage factor, I’d return in the future if the price and location were right for my needs – ideally to check out one of the rooms with a sweeping Central Park view.

While the property has been refurbished throughout the years, much of its historical character remains. Southgate is located in the hotel and is a casual-upscale bar, restaurant, and lounge. The space has high ceilings, modern decor, and an excellent ambiance for evening cocktails. Seconds away from Central Park, this beautiful hotels puts guests right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York City. In fact, guests can have their cake and eat it too as the JW Marriott Essex House is close enough to all major New York City attractions but located in the quiet of Central Park.

The heavily touristed crosstown street it sits on, Central Park South, is a mix of high-rise hotels and high-end apartment buildings. Retail is sparse on these park blocks, so there's very little indigenous street life; virtually everyone you'll see there will have a camera hanging around their neck. However, just two blocks east is Fifth Avenue, home to some of the most exclusive boutiques in New York City. Major attractions such as Times Square, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, and the MoMA can all be found within a 15-minute walk of the Essex House. There are nine subway lines within two blocks of the hotel, which makes getting to other sights farther afield -- including Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, and Brooklyn Bridge – easy, fast, and cheap.
