WTJRC 2024 Welcome to JAMROCK Reggae Cruise

It came out really good and it's very Billy Idol. In fact, I think it’s more Billy Idol than Miley Cyrus. She’s a really great person and she works at her singing — I watched her rehearsing for the Super Bowl performance she gave. She rehearsed all Saturday morning, all Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning and it was that afternoon. It's more the record company that she had didn't really get "Night Crawling"— it was one of the best songs on Plastic Hearts, and I don't think they understood that. They wanted to go with Dua Lipa, they wanted to go with the modern, young acts, and I don't think they realized that that song was resonating with her fans.

Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise 2023 ADD

A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well. It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown. The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles.

Damian Marley's Welcome To Jamrock Cruise Celebrates Five Years With Big Lineup

His ability to easily shift between rapped verses and Patois-chanted lyrics with optimal dexterity is highlighted on the clever "Kabaka vs. Pyramid," a battle track from his 2016 Accurate mixtape, produced by Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire. As "Here Comes the Hotstepper" ascended to No. 1 in the U.S. (and several other countries) a bidding war ensued and Kamoze signed to Elektra Records. Disillusioned with the lack of remuneration, he walked away from that deal after releasing just one album.

This week, GRAMMY.com spoke with Billy Idol about his latest EP,  Cage, and continuing to rock through decades of changing tastes. Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key. Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat.

Billy Idol is a true rock 'n' roll survivor who has persevered through cultural shifts and personal struggles. While some may think of Idol solely for "Rebel Yell" and "White Wedding," the singer's musical influences span genres and many of his tunes are less turbo-charged than his '80s hits would belie. In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box.

We're not stopping each other doing things outside of what we’re working on together. All of that enables us to carry on working together. I mean, just standing there on stage with him is always a treat. I think that's another reason why we can hang together after all this time because we've got the sense of humor to enable us to go forward.

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch. Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair. Kabaka Pyramid’s hip-hop influences run as deep as his reggae/dancehall inspirations. Prior to making his name as a reggae sing-jay, the 2023 GRAMMY winner pursued a career as a rapper.

“Maintaining the community feel is important and if it gets too big, we might lose that,” explains Damian, whose other business endeavors include a recently opened Colorado marijuana dispensary, Stony Hill, also the name of his fourth album due next year on Republic Records. Marley and his manager Dan Dalton are the co-founders/co-owners of the Welcome to Jamrock Reggae cruise, presented in association with Flying Dutchmen Travel. This year’s tiered pricing (meals and entertainment included) started at $899.00 per person for an interior cabin and crested at $3,200.00 for an ocean view suite.

Sometimes life opens up unique opportunities and when I was presented with the chance to visit her home country for the first time I ran straight toward it. This came at the hands of the ‘Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise’ a 5-night cruise founded by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley who, alongside his manager Dan Dalton, has created a celebration of the island’s rich culture, selling out every year since its inception in 2014, bar a brief hiatus during the pandemic. This year it consisted of three days cruising and two days docked in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios respectively.

Sean performed on the inaugural Jamrock cruise and was delighted to return this year, delivering a well-received opening night set. Jamrock Productions invites you to take a Journey to Jamaica on the 9th Annual Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise. We are sailing December 9, 2024, out of Miami, Fl to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Jamaica on a 5-night cruise on board Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas! With punk going so mega in England, we definitely got a leg up. We still had a lot of work to get where we got to, and rightly so because you find out that you need to do that.

It was all about how relationships can free you and add a lot to your life. It was a cry of love, nothing to do with the Civil War or anything like that. Perri was a big part of my life, a big part of being Billy Idol. When we initially were making [punk] music, it hadn't become accepted yet.

Dancing well into the morning, every five minutes the crowd chanted for the selecta to ‘WHEEL IT UP’, losing their composure each time the DJs suspended on the walkway above played a killer tune. This year the legendary Shabba Ranks, Damian “Jr Gong” Marley and Stephen “Ragga” Marley will hit the stage for what promises to be an explosive return. An additional bonus for those attending is the chance to see living reggae legend Burning Spear perform too. The six-day, five-night cruise will depart from Miami, Florida’s cruise port with stops in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Jamaica before returning.

The thing that stood out above all else during the cruise was the love and commitment that Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley has for his culture and community, which is returned tenfold in kind. On the 7th of December, I boarded Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. A symphony of reggae and bashment swam over the air as we departed, the Miami skyline shrinking slowly against the sunset.

She closed her set strongly with Wicked Fe Please Me and her biggest hit, Action. Then she delivered the boom with a cleverly constructed Bam Bam medley with songs such as Murda She Wrote, Toots’ original festival slow-burner Bam Bam, and Sister Nancy’s internationally known version of Bam Bam. He reeled off a series of hits such as Hurt the Heart, Damage and My Yes and My No, Tease Her, and closed his set with Raid the Barn and a cover of Wanna Know What Love Is. The new sail dates for Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise 2022 will be December 7-12, 2022 sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas, out of Miami Florida port terminals. The Freedom of the Seas ship is the sister ship to the Independence of the Seas. For the time being, however, Damian isn’t planning to increase the size of Jamrock, nor the frequency of its sails.

"I took a piece of each genre, I love jazz—we listened to jazz, classical, lots of different music, so you'll find a piece of every kind of music in our music." The Jamrock cruise’s success provides proof of reggae’s popularity and, more importantly, its economic viability despite the genre’s limited mainstream visibility and modest record sales. “For one of my heroes to come and experience something that I was a part of building is a great feeling.
